What Caught My Eye (no. 14)
Some interesting articles and podcasts that caught my eye this week
Here’s this week’s edition of articles that I thought worth reading and sharing. Don’t hesitate to recommend your own reads; I may include some as well.
Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer, “I Run the Country and the World,”The Atlantic, April 28, 2025. In an interview with Trump, the reporters asked the president if his second term felt different from his first. “The first time, I had two things to do—run the country and survive; I had all these crooked guys,” he said. “And the second time, I run the country and the world.”
Cory Doctorow, The digital countermove to Trump tariffs, Financial Times, May 1, 2025. A computer scientist suggests that countries can strike back against US tariffs by repealing their “anticircumvention” laws the US has brokered as part of past trade deals, which prohibits picking digital locks that give US tech firms their monopoly power.
McKay Coppins, Growing Up Murdoch, The Atlantic, February 14, 2025. You’ve seen Successions. Now read the “life-imitating-art-immigrating-life” story in the April magazine cover story. As gripping a real life tale as the HBO series.
Christopher MIller and James Politi, How Volodymyr Zelenskyy lured Donald Trump with Ukraine’s minerals, Financial Times, May 1, 2025. An inside look on how Ukraine lured the Trump administrations into a bigger commitment to its future through the minerals deal. The only question is: will it work.
Nahal Toosi, Trump’s National Security Team Was Extraordinarily Weak Even Before Waltz’s Ouster, Politico, May 1, 2025. In her regular column, the excellent foreign affairs reporter argues that Mike Waltz’s ouster won’t change much. He was already weak in an administration where all the power lies with one man.
Torsten Slok, How are US consumers and firms responding to tariffs? Apollo Global Management Briefing, April 2025. The Chief Economist of Apollo Global Management explains in graphic detail his view that there is a 90 percent change of a recession in the US because of the trade tariffs imposed by President Trump.
Andrew Marantz, Is It Happening Here? New Yorker, APril 28, 2025. “Other countries have watched their democracies slip away gradually, without tanks in the streets. That may be where we’re headed—or where we already are.” A sobering warning.
Finally, in case you missed it here are links to articles I wrote, interviews I did, panels I joined, and a synopsis of my weekly podcast on world news.
