Trump talked to invader Putin before Zelensky. Prior to a 3-way negotiation, he’s publicly implied (1) Less U.S. support for Ukaine’s defense, (2) No to joining NATO & (3) Ukraine to give up territory. Putin: Gave up his leverage. Cool!
As a 60s hippy liberal, I find myself in the odd position of having to defend Trump on the particular matter of European security and American interests.
1) We might start by keeping in mind which country Trump was elected to serve. Not an EU nation, and not Ukraine, but America. What is in America's security interest? Not being involved in YET ANOTHER European war. What is in America's security interest? Not getting in to a fight with Russia, which has the ability to erase America in literally minutes.
2) What is in the interests of the EU? That is for EU leaders to decide. The EU is at least TEN TIMES richer than Russia, so if they wish to assist the European state of Ukraine in it's hour of need they have the means to do so. And, it's NOT in the EU's interest to remain forever dependent on America.
3) Previous American presidents have been making these points to our European friends for decades. And the response from the EU has mostly been dodge and weave, delay, dismiss, ignore, put it off until some other day, talk, talk, talk and so on.
Yes, Donald Trump is a total asshole. But that is what this job requires. Someone who understands that pushing the EU off the end of the diving board is the only thing that will ever get them to take responsibility for their own defense. This job requires someone willing to do the pushing.
And, if Europe will become responsible for it's own defense, that frees American assets for other possible fight elsewhere. Having those assets available for other fights in in America's security interests.
In the end, America, the EU, and Ukraine will all be well served by Trump's insight and actions on this particular matter. Once they wake up and get off their ass, the EU can be in a position to credibly deter any further Russian aggression forever. Again, and this can't be stated enough....
The EU is at least TEN TIMES richer than Russia.
They have the means to defend Europe. What they've been lacking is the will. Trump just gave them the will.
PLEASE NOTE: There are many other very good reasons to be strongly against Trump. This just isn't one of them. I will never vote for Trump in any circumstance. But if Trump says the sky is blue, he's not automatically wrong just because he's Trump.
Trump and Putin are fascist dictators. Trump wants to beat the 53 day mark that Hitler set when he overturned the German constitution. Trump is well on his way to that end. Read Chris Hedges American Fascists.
Of course Trump will sell out Ukraine. It will be his bow to the likes of Putin. Trump is a fascist and a wannabe dictator taking his clues from Putin.
He already did. Why wouldn't he, he sold us out and we are his own country
THE GREAT NEGOTIATOR - BS!
